Discovery Foundation and BAFSA donate £20,000 to CHAS

A sprinkler retrofit at a Fife care home being prepared for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland has resulted in a combined £20,000 donation to the charity, helping support children who may die young and their families.
The Discovery Foundation has presented £10,000 to CHAS, Children’s Hospices Across Scotland, following Discovery Fire Sprinklers’ work on the retrofit of Mina Lodge in Kinglassie, Fife. The British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association (BAFSA) matched the gift with a further £10,000, bringing the combined donation to £20,000.
Discovery Fire Sprinklers was appointed by Algo Construction as sprinkler contractor on the project, which saw an existing care home adapted and prepared for use by CHAS.
How the donation came about
Shortly after work began, BAFSA got in touch with the Discovery team. The association was supporting the project with a donation of its own, and was also developing a case study showing how sprinkler protection can be installed successfully within an existing care building.
Once the team understood more about the project and the work CHAS does, they wanted to make a contribution too. Discovery approached its supply partners, Pure Water Storage, Rapidrop and Application Engineering, each of which supported the project with discounts on materials. Those savings allowed more of the funding to be directed to the charity itself.
“As soon as we understood who this building was for, we knew we wanted to do more than install a sprinkler system. CHAS does extraordinary work for children and families across Scotland, and we’re grateful to BAFSA and to our supply partners for helping us turn one project into real support for the charity.”

Certified to the required standard
The completed sprinkler system was fully inspected and certified by LPCB, giving independent, third-party assurance that the installation meets the required standards. For a building that will care for some of Scotland’s most vulnerable children, that certification matters.
Marking the moment
Following completion, the Discovery team returned to Kinglassie alongside Ali Perry and Alan Crichton of BAFSA and James Latto of Algo Construction to mark the project and present the donations.
The £20,000 will support the vital work CHAS carries out with children and families across Scotland.
Supporting children and families across Scotland
Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS) provides care and support to children who may die young and their families, helping them through some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable.
Every week, three children in Scotland die from an incurable condition. CHAS works in partnership with health and social care providers to deliver specialist hospice and palliative care for babies, children and young people aged 0–21, alongside support for their families.
With the ambition that no family should face the death of their child alone, CHAS provides care across Scotland, whether in families’ own homes, at its two hospices or through joint CHAS and NHS teams in Scotland’s three children’s hospitals.
Its work ensures that children and families can access compassionate, specialist care and support, wherever they live.
Everyone at Discovery is proud to have played a part in a project with such an important purpose, and grateful to all those who helped make the contribution possible. The Foundation looks forward to continuing its support for CHAS in the future.
